Passports, Disease Surveillance and Breeding

On the 14 February 2002 The Rt Hon Alun Michael MP, Minister for Rural Affairs, announced that the Government was to implement legislation requiring all horses to have passports and unique reference numbers by 31 December 2003. He also said that a disease surveillance scheme should be introduced. The announcement follows legislation introduced by the European Union which requires a unique reference number and information on medication administered to equidae to be entered in the passport if the animal is destined to go into the human food chain. The disease surveillance element is included by DEFRA as an aid to the protection of disease spreading in both the equine and human population. Breeding is included, as there is a need for the non-racing industry to improve the management of breeding affairs and redevelop a database to support this. These three areas of concern therefore need to be developed together as there are so many complementary factors.

Gypsy Cob Registration Passports

The content of passports is laid down in various EU Directives and repeated in GB Statutory Instruments. The Statutory Instruments specify that only approved organisations may issue passports, currently there are 53 such GB approved bodies. Those Passport-Issuing Organisations (PIOs) are free to include additional data within their passports, and many do so.

In order to register your horse with a Passport, please download the passport  application forms (see below) and fill out both pages completely and submit with 2 photographs. One of each side of the horse with the horses face turned toward the camera with the forelock tucked aside so that all facial markings are clearly visible.
